2027 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Returns With New Camper-Friendly Tourer Model and Fresh Tech Updates
Volkswagen is giving the ID.Buzz another shot in the U.S., and this time the electric retro van returns with more purpose, more personality, and a version that leans directly into the growing camper lifestyle trend. After skipping the 2026 model year entirely, the 2027 Volkswagen ID.Buzz is officially back, bringing a refreshed lineup and a new Tourer trim designed for buyers who want their EV to double as a weekend escape machine.
The ID.Buzz arrived with enormous hype when it launched for 2025, largely because it captured the nostalgic spirit of the original Microbus while modernizing it with electric power and futuristic styling. Unfortunately for Volkswagen, excitement alone did not translate into the sales numbers many expected. High pricing and a competitive EV market likely played a role in slowing momentum. Even so, VW never fully gave up on the project, and the return of the ID.Buzz for 2027 signals that the automaker still believes there is a place for its iconic people mover in America.
One of the biggest additions for 2027 is the new ID.Buzz Tourer 4Motion. This trim takes inspiration from camper-style packages previously offered only in Europe and finally brings those features stateside. Volkswagen has equipped the Tourer with practical camping touches including a fold-out mattress, ventilation inserts for the front windows, integrated window shades, and even an exterior table and chairs setup. There is also a dedicated Overnight mode that helps support cabin use while parked overnight, making the ID.Buzz feel more like a compact electric camper than a traditional family van. For buyers looking to combine road trip practicality with EV efficiency, this could easily become the most interesting version in the lineup.
Volkswagen is also improving the technology experience across the board. Every 2027 ID.Buzz receives the brand’s latest ID.S 6 infotainment software, which promises quicker responses and a cleaner navigation interface. The updated system is designed to simplify access to vehicle settings while introducing a built-in app store that supports third-party apps like Spotify and YouTube. Another important upgrade is the inclusion of a NACS-to-CCS adapter, giving drivers easier access to Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network. That move alone could significantly improve the ownership experience for long-distance EV travelers.
VW has not yet announced official pricing for the 2027 ID.Buzz lineup, but the previous model ranged from $61,545 to $72,540. The company appears focused on simplifying production, which could potentially help stabilize pricing moving forward. Volkswagen will also streamline paint offerings with exclusively two-tone color combinations, including a new Candy White over Cherry Red finish that perfectly complements the van’s retro-inspired design. With improved tech, broader charging access, and a camper-oriented trim that adds real lifestyle appeal, the 2027 ID.Buzz may finally have the formula needed to turn all that buzz into lasting success.
