Red Sox acquire pitching prospect for recently DFA’d infielder
The Red Sox bolstered their minor league pitching depth on Sunday, announcing they have acquired right-hander Joe Vogatsky from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for infielder Enmanuel Valdez.
Valdez had been designated for assignment earlier in the week as the corresponding move for the Carlos Narvaez trade.
Vogatsky was the Pirates’ 19th round pick in last summer’s MLB Draft and did not appear in any games for a Pirates minor league affiliate following his selection. The 22-year-old pitched four seasons of college baseball for James Madison University, most recently recording a 3.49 ERA over 49 innings out of the bullpen.
He also briefly pitched for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2023, posting a 1.42 ERA in four appearances.
For the Red Sox, Vogatsky represents another developmental arm the club hopes can blossom into a future bullpen weapon in the club’s new pitching program. Vogatsky boasts a mid-90s fastball as well as an intriguing slider, both of which are complemented by his deceptive arm angle.
Valdez finishes his Red Sox career having batted .235 with 12 home rums, 28 RBI and a .686 OPS in 125 MLB games. Originally acquired alongside Wilyer Abreu in 2022’s Christian Vazquez trade, Valdez proved a productive pinch hitter with some pop but who also struggled with his consistency and wasn’t a contributor on defense.
