The Bruins reportedly have dealt center/wing Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche for a decent return.

Coyle, who has one year left on his contract at $5.25 million, was sent to the Avs for Casey Middlestadt, who has two years left on his deal for $5.75 million, prospect William Zellers (the Avs’ third-round pick last June) and a second-round pick.

Middlestadt, 26, was obtained last year by the Avs from the Buffalo Sabres to be their third line center but he did not play up to the Avs’ expectations. In 63 games with the Avs this year, he has 11-23-34 totals. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Middlestadt’s best season was 2022-23 in Buffalo, when he had 15-44-59 totals.

Even if Middlestadt has fallen short of hopes that come with being the eighth overall pick in 2017, it’s still a good package for the 33-year-old Coyle.

Zellers is playing now in Green Bay (USHL), where he has 37-21-58 totals in 40 games, second in scoring in the junior league.

Coyle, the Weymouth native, now has a great chance to have another run at the Stanley Cup with Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.
