Patriots activate rookie off injured reserve, place DB Marcus Jones on IR

The Patriots placed defensive back Marcus Jones on injured reserve Friday and activated offensive tackle Caedan Wallace off IR, making the rookie available for this weekend’s game against the Chargers.

Jones’ season is now over. He did not practice the past two weeks due to a hip injury. Jones finishes the year having recorded nine starts in 14 game appearances, 58 tackles, an interception and 10 pass breakups. Jones played both safety and cornerback for the Patriots, who recently returned corner Alex Austin and safety Marte Mapu to help replace him.

Wallace is active for the first time since suffering a serious ankle injury in Week 4. The third-round rookie returned to practice in recent weeks and could start Saturday versus the Chargers. Wallace is among a group of young players head coach Jerod Mayo identified earlier this month as needing to play more from down the stretch of the regular season.

In four games this year, Wallace has made one start and taken 70 offensive snaps. The Patriots drafted him 68th overall last April out of Penn State.

The Pats also ruled out starting center Ben Brown for Saturday’s game. Former first-round pick Cole Strange or midseason pickup Lecitus Smith is expected to replace Brown in the starting lineup.
