Massachusetts firefighter dies after suffering cardiac arrest in the line of duty

A Brockton firefighter has died after he went into cardiac arrest on a call, the fire department announced in a release Sunday.

“Firefighter (Jeffrey) Albanese fought very hard but succumb to his injuries just after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night, December 21, 2024,” Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli wrote. “Firefighter Albanese fought a courageous battle with his family and brother and sister Firefighters by his side.”

On Dec. 9, the chief said, Albanese was responding to an incident when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

Albanese was resuscitated by his fellow firefighters, Brewster EMS and then medical staff at Signature Brockton Hospital, the release said.

The firefighter was then taken to Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston the same day, Nardelli wrote, where he received “incredible care” until his death Saturday.

Albanese joined the Brockton Fire Department on Sept. 11, 2000, serving on Squad A, Ladder Company 1, the chief said. At the time of his death, he was the senior man of Engine Company 4.

The union IAFF Local 144 said in a statement on X that Albanese was a union director and leaves behind a wife and two children.
