A gift of music: Boston Pops brings holiday cheer to patients at Spaulding Rehab
Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, a Boston Pops ensemble and a Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital choir brought the sounds of sugar plums and jingle bells to patients and staff Tuesday.
The concert, now holiday tradition, was established in 2010 to honor former Boston Pops member Pat Hollenback who received care at the hospital following a stroke.
As part of the concert, patients used “jingle sticks” to join the performance and incorporate the music into their rehab care and healing.
The Spaulding Tabernacle Choir, as it is known, performed with the Pops and is comprised of staff at the hospital.
“This has become such a cherished tradition for the Boston Pops,” said Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart. “We are very grateful for the doctors and staff who help make it possible to bring the wonderful gift of music to brighten this holiday season.”
Performing at area hospitals has become a tradition for the Boston Pops during the holidays, even as much as the Holiday Pops concerts at Symphony Hall. Earlier in the day Tuesday, the Pops ensemble brought a bright selection of songs to the young patients at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Brighton.
