Patriots see ‘special player,’ culture-changer in rookie offensive starter

The Patriots believe they found a steal in rookie right guard Layden Robinson.

Robinson, a fourth-round pick out of Texas A&M, was the Patriots’ only rookie starter in Sunday’s 16-10 Week 1 win over the Bengals. Robinson earned a starting role late in training camp, and it doesn’t sound like he’ll be giving his spot up anytime soon based on comments from head coach Jerod Mayo on Monday morning.

Rhamondre Stevenson made Jerod Mayo look smart in Patriots’ Week 1 win

“There was a point in time during training camp where, not only myself, but I think the other coaches, saw it that we said, ‘You know what, Layden Robinson has an opportunity to be a special player in this league.’ He’s tough. He’ll move guys off the line of scrimmage. He can do it all,” Mayo said during a video conference call. “And just his overall effort and mentality is something that we think about changing the culture. He’s definitely one of those guys that fits into that box, and he did a great job. Now, in saying that, it’s only one game. We’ll see how that continues to progress going forward.”

Robinson helped pave the way for running back Rhamondre Stevenson on the Patriots’ only touchdown Sunday against the Bengals, a 3-yard run.

The Patriots dressed eight rookies for Sunday’s win: Robinson, quarterback Drake Maye, wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, offensive tackle Caedan Wallace, cornerback Marcellas Dial, quarterback Joe Milton (inactive as an emergency third QB), tight end Jaheim Bell and undrafted safety Dell Pettus. Wide receiver Javon Baker and waiver-wire pickup Curtis Jacobs, a linebacker, were healthy scratches.
