Frost likely behind for Boston with warm weather ahead, NWS says

Last week’s sudden cold snap and accompanying late season frost should be the last of the spring’s freezing weather for the Greater Boston area, according to the National Weather Service, and this week should be warmer if a bit “unsettled.”

That’s especially good news for gardeners ready to get plants in the ground. The average last freezing night for Boston is April 9 and, though temperatures in Boston fell dangerously close to freezing just last week, NWS forecasters told the Herald that the latest a sudden frost has ever stymied the efforts of spring gardeners in the city was May 3rd of 1882.

With warm weather coming in the days ahead, that probably means those around Boston can safely start planting, Meteorologist Bill Leatham said.

“At this point, through this upcoming week, it doesn’t look like our temperatures fall into that range where there would be that risk for frost,” he said.

That’s not necessarily true for the whole state of course. In the upper elevations of Worcester county, frost came on the last day of May once — in 1938. Last week saw a couple of days there record below freezing temperatures, but that should probably be the last of it, Leatham said.

“We’re roughly to that point where we’re past it,” he said, though he cautioned that it’s still “not a bad idea to keep an eye on the temperature forecast.”

Monday could see highs in the 70s around Boston under sunny skies and close in on the 80s outside the city and away from the sea breeze, Leatham said. It will barely fall into the 40s overnight, he said.

The “unsettled” part of the forecast begins Tuesday, according to the meteorologist. Temperatures could climb back into the 70s or stay in the lower 60s depending on where you are — Boston and the Cape and Islands will be kept cooler by the wind off the ocean, he said — but by 9 p.m. a storm front rolls in off the Atlantic bringing a 60% chance of rain.

Chances for rain continue overnight as the temperature falls into the middle 40s, and is forecast to continue until about 9 a.m., Wednesday, when the NWS predicts it will be cooler with a high in the middle 50s. Overnight lows heading into Thursday are expected to fall toward the middle-40s.

The sun should return by Thursday morning, Leatham said, pushing temperatures inside of Boston into the upper 60s and into the low-70s outside the city. Clouds roll in overnight, bringing the temperature down toward 50.

There is a 30% chance of rain on what is otherwise expected to be a sunny Friday, according to the weather service, and the temperature is expected to clear 70 degrees in Boston and push toward 80 degrees elsewhere.
