Report: Red Sox swing trade for veteran first baseman
Before taking the field Saturday for their second of three games at Fenway Park, the Red Sox and Cubs reportedly swung a trade.
Boston acquired veteran first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper from Chicago in exchange for cash considerations, according to multiple reports.
MassLive was the first to report the deal.
Cooper slashed .270/.341/.432 with one home run and six RBI in 12 games for the Cubs before being designated for assignment on Tuesday. The 33-year-old previously spent time with San Diego, Miami and the New York Yankees, earning his lone All-Star selection with the Marlins in 2022.
The trade addressed a major need for the Red Sox, who will be without first baseman Triston Casas for the foreseeable future. Casas tore cartilage in his ribs during a win over Pittsburgh on April 20, and his backup, Bobby Dalbec, is hitting a meager .093/.152/.116 this season.
Dalbec, who spent most of last season in Triple-A Worcester, had just one extra-base hit and one RBI in 43 at-bats entering Saturday’s game. He’d struck out 23 times with three walks.
The Red Sox will need to clear a roster spot to finalize their trade for Cooper.
