Patriots still looking to add offensive ‘weapons,’ O-line help

FOXBORO — With the quarterback pick out of the way, now the Patriots need to build around third overall pick Drake Maye.

And they can do that with their remaining picks in the 2024 NFL Draft by staying put, trading up or down or even dealing for veteran players.

“I just think we need to support him in any way we can, on the field, off the field,” Wolf said. “We need to add some weapons to the offense. We need to shore up the offensive line. We have good players already at those positions but really just increasing the depth and the competition. Like Jerod mentioned, that competition is going to be at every position.”

Maye didn’t agree with the assessment that he’s entering one of the worst situations in the NFL for a rookie quarterback.

“I think they’re wrong. They had that defense last year, a lot of teams at low points. Looking forward to helping out in any way on the offense, offensively and just looking forward to being there with Coach Mayo in his first year. Congrats to him. For anybody saying that, we’ll find out this season. Just going to work hard with the guys and prove them wrong.”

Maye’s top pass-catchers include running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson, tight end Hunter Henry and wide receivers Kendrick Bourne, K.J. Osborn, DeMario Douglas and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

The Patriots’ current starting offensive line would likely be left tackle Chukwuma Okorafor, left guard Cole Strange, center David Andrews, right guard Sidy Sow and right tackle Mike Onwenu. Okorafor only started at right tackle during his time with the Steelers, and Strange is coming off of a season-ending knee injury.
