Curley: Banning Trump from ballots a sure way to get him re-elected
The “Get Trump” crowd is probably going to get Trump reelected.
If and when that day does come, the pink-hatted social justice warriors will have no one to blame but themselves.
The latest chapter of the left’s never-ending quest to destroy He Who Shall Not Be Named came on Thursday night. Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, ruled that former President Trump will not be included on the state’s 2024 primary ballot. She made this decision based in part on her conclusion that he engaged in an insurrection.
Bellows knows this decision is going to be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. That’s why she, like the justices in Colorado, stayed her own ruling pending a Superior Court decision.
In the meantime though, liberals can get a dopamine hit as they repost “Trump Banned from Maine Ballot” articles onto their Facebook feeds.
Even all these years later, so many people are trying to destroy the former President. However, their strategy is shortsighted.
After the dust settles and Trump is inevitably on the ballot, what did these stunts accomplish?
Well, it depends. Let’s run through the possibilities.
We know that Trump’s base is going to be reenergized (as if they needed more enthusiasm) from what they see as partisan attacks on their candidate.
We also know that those suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome are going to be touting these decisions as proof that Orange Man really is bad. He is worse than Mussolini! and Hitler! and Stalin! and… well, you know the drill.
But when we talk about 2024, those people aren’t the decision makers.
Elections come down to people who are obsessed with politics trying to understand how people who aren’t obsessed with politics feel about politics.
Like it or not, independents are the name of the game. The Left is taking a huge gamble on how they think the independents will react to this latest news cycle.
The best case scenario for the Democrat party is that these decisions get overruled by the Supreme Court but leave independents with a bad taste in their mouths.
After seeing the coverage of Trump being momentarily booted from the ballots of a handful of states, these voters decide to give Biden another shot. Despite Biden’s handling of the economy, the southern border, Afghanistan, etc., independents can’t stomach voting for the big bad temporarily-banned Orange man.
So what is the worst case? The ballot bans move more independents toward the MAGA tent. By the way — Trump’s tent? It’s a yuge beautiful tent that plays the YMCA on repeat. Everybody loves this tent.
So which scenario is more likely?
It’s gonna be the second one, for a few reasons.
For one, nothing surprises the American people anymore, especially when it comes to Donald Trump.
Mugshots, FBI raids, impeachments… the shock factor is long gone. The American people are desensitized to the supposedly sensational. “Unprecedented” “historic” stuff is all part of our daily routines at this point.
Moreover, the insurrection was billed by Democrats like Vice President Kamala Harris as the worst thing since the Civil War…and 9/11… and Pearl Harbor.
Now that the American people have seen two wars break out, that hyperbolic nonsense might not hit the way it used to.
At this point, Democrats will be lucky if Trump’s ballot bans are a blip on the public’s radar.
But the real reason this could backfire on Democrats comes down to human nature.
It is called reactance.
“Reactance is an unpleasant motivational arousal that emerges when people experience a threat to or loss of their free behaviors. It serves as a motivator to restore one’s freedom,” state the authors of a paper published in the psychology journal Zeitschrift Fur Psychologie.
Another way to put it? The Streisand effect.
By trying to take Trump off the ballot, judges and politicians are essentially telling voters that they can’t be trusted to make their own choices. If U.S. history is any guide, Americans don’t take kindly to being bossed around.
Then again, I’m sure those history lessons were canceled a long time ago.
