Olympics: St. Paul gymnast Suni Lee comes up clutch, secures her spot in all-around final

St. Paul native Suni Lee needed a big score in the final rotation of qualifications on Sunday morning if she wanted to pass teammate Jordan Chiles for a spot in the all-around final.

Luckily for Lee, she got to finish on uneven bars, arguably her best even of the bunch.

After executing her routine to near perfection in front of a packed house at Bercy Arena in Paris, Lee had to wait to see if she had done enough. She smiled when her score finally flashed across the big screen — 14.866 — and her longtime coach Jess Graba rushed over to congratulate her.

After famously winning the all-around at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Lee will get a chance to defend her gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In total, Lee finished with an aggregate score of 56.132, narrowly beating out Chiles, who finished with an aggregate score of 56.065. Meanwhile, the GOAT Simone Biles finished with an aggregate score of 59.566, easily securing the other spot for Team USA.

Only two gymnasts from each country get to compete in the all-around final.
