Celtics’ Derrick White modest about potentially earning another All-Defensive nod
MILWAUKEE — Derrick White would likely not thrive in a job interview. The Celtics guard, despite being one of the team’s most valuable players, does not like to boast about himself, and he’s certainly not in this for individual glory. He was admittedly uncomfortable earlier this season when he was stat-chasing his first career triple-double.
So when White – who was named to his first career All-Defensive team last season – was asked on Tuesday if he feels like he deserves to be on another All-Defensive team this season, it wasn’t surprising when he was a little reluctant.
“I don’t know if deserves is the right word, but I’m just going out there and trying to help us win, make life difficult for the great players in this league,” White said. “We have great defenders all over this roster, so it makes my job easier. But I don’t know how to really campaign for myself. That’s not my strength.”
White has certainly been aided by the additions of Jrue Holiday, a five-time All-Defensive selection, and Kristaps Porzingis, as well as high-level defenders like Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Al Horford. But he has continued to raise his level. Entering Tuesday, White had compiled career highs with 86 blocks – which leads all NBA guards – and 71 steals.
And while White doesn’t like to campaign for himself, he acknowledged those numbers when pressed on what he thinks he’s done better defensively this season.
“I think I’ve gotten more blocks and more steals, so that right there is pretty good I’d say,” White said.
Queta rewarded
The Celtics finally filled their 15th and final roster spot this week as they converted Neemias Queta’s two-way contract to a standard contract. The deal is for multiple years, according to a report from MassLive.
It’s a deserving reward for Queta, the young 7-foot center who has impressed in his opportunities over 26 games with the Celtics this season. He’s now eligible to play in the postseason.
“It’s good. It validates him, it validates his work, it validates the things he’s done throughout the season,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. “It validates the staff, the development team in the G-League. I think all of that goes into, when you sign guys like that, that’s the goal to be able to convert that. So that’s a testament to everybody that’s involved, starting with him.”
White was thrilled to see Queta get his contract.
“Shout out to Neemi, for real,” White said. “I mean, every day he comes in and works his tail off. Any minutes he gets he’s out there competing and doing whatever we ask him to do and he’s playing amazing right now in Maine.”
More history
Porzingis on Monday was selected as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after a dominant stretch on both ends of the floor in which he averaged 19.8 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game to lead the Celtics to a 4-0 week. It marked the first time in NBA history that a team had four different players win the weekly award in a single season, as Porzingis joined Tatum, Brown and White.
White joked about the manner of Porzingis’ honor after the big man played just three quarters in their wins over the Kings and Blazers.
“I was like, playing three quarters to win player of the week is pretty impressive,” White said. “But he’s been great for us all year. Just a great player, so it’s great having him. Just kind of talks about the team and how when some guys are out or we’re all together, it doesn’t really matter who is doing whatever, it’s about the team and credit to the whole roster.” …
Porzingis (right hamstring injury management) and Al Horford (left big toe sprain) both sat out for Tuesday’s game against the Bucks as the Celtics continued to manage the workload of their regulars over the final week of the regular season. Xavier Tillman started in their absences.
