Kenley Jansen dominant in return to mound, Red Sox rally past Orioles 3-2
The Red Sox top two relief pitchers took an important step towards being ready for Opening Day on Thursday night, as Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin each got on the mound during Boston’s 3-2 win over the Orioles.
Jansen looked much better than he did in his spring debut last Friday, when he allowed two home runs in an ugly 0.2 inning performance. This time the veteran closer was dominant, posting a perfect fifth inning while striking out two on only 13 pitches.
Jansen’s fastball sat between 93-95 mph, and after his outing the 36-year-old told NESN’s Tom Caron he felt good and expects to be ready for Opening Day.
“It’s been a tough spring for me,” Jansen said on the TV broadcast. “Battling a lot of injuries, came in with the lat problem, then the shoulder, then my back, so didn’t feel good until today and that’s what you’ve got to do, you’ve got to be mentally tough, be patient, do things right in the weight room and things will turn around.”
Jansen was originally scheduled to make his second appearance of the spring on Monday but had his outing pushed back twice due to back tightness. Had Jansen been pushed back any further his availability for Opening Day would have likely been called into question, but now Jansen should make two more appearances before starting the season with the big league club in Seattle.
Martin, who has been limited throughout camp due to a groin injury, was in a similar boat, though his outing Thursday did not go as smoothly as Jansen’s. The Red Sox set-up man recorded only one out in the sixth inning on 20 pitches, allowing two hits and an unearned run that scored on a throwing error by catcher Connor Wong.
The first hit was a double to Michael Perez, who’d later score on Wong’s error to tie the game at 1-1, and the second was a scorched comebacker up the middle that barely missed hitting Martin, who was making his first appearance in a Grapefruit League game this spring.
Most of Boston’s projected starters also played the majority of Thursday’s game, with Trevor Story going 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base and Ceddanne Rafaela, Tyler O’Neill and Masataka Yoshida all hitting doubles. Wilyer Abreu had an RBI in the second, and after Baltimore took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh Boston rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame, getting an RBI single by Triston Casas and the go-ahead run on a Yoshida groundout.
In addition to Boston’s top relievers, starter Cooper Criswell threw four scoreless innings with two hits, no walks and four strikeouts, Lucas Luetge allowed one run over 1.1 innings, and Brennan Bernardino tossed a scoreless eighth.
