Watch these Red Sox top prospects in Spring Breakout game on Saturday

Some of the most promising talent in the Red Sox pipeline will be on display at 1:05 p.m. ET Saturday afternoon, when the Sox host the Atlanta Braves for a new kind of top prospect showdown.

The two clubs are set to face off in one of the 16 inaugural Spring Breakout games, exhibition contests comprised solely of each organization’s top prospects.

Boston’s new Big Three – Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kyle Teel – are scheduled to participate. In addition to holding the top three spots in MLB Pipeline’s Red Sox Top 30 prospects, Mayer ranks No. 5 among all shortstop prospects, Anthony ranks No. 10 among outfielders, and Teel is No. 5 among catchers. They’re also ranked No. 15, No. 24, and No. 40 overall.

It’s possible that at least one of these blue-chip prospects will be up with the Red Sox at some point in the coming season. MLB Pipeline lists 2024 as Mayer’s big-league ETA, with Anthony and Teel expected next year. However, while Teel is the newest of the three, he’s also the eldest (22) and unlike Mayer and Anthony – who were drafted out of high school – he came into the organization with three years of college ball under his belt. When the Sox selected the catcher, 22, 14th overall in last summer’s draft, he left Virginia as the most decorated catcher in their program history. That added experience factored into Teel moving up three levels  Double-A less than three months after signing with the club.

Fans will also get a look at Miguel Bleis, the power-hitting young outfielder who’s considered a five-tool player with endless potential. His ’23 campaign was cut short due to left-shoulder subluxation. Yoeilin Cespedes and Nazzan Zanetello, two of the organization’s most promising shortstops, are slated to get in the game as well.

Right-handers Wikelman Gonzalez and Richard Fitts, who rank No. 7 and No. 12 in the organization, headline the arms contingent. Gonzalez is a homegrown product, signed out of Venezuela in July 2018, but Fitts is brand-new to Boston; the Red Sox acquired him in the Alex Verdugo trade in early December.

There will be at least one player with big-league experience in the contest. Ceddanne Rafaela appears to be on the precipice of his first Opening Day roster, but his rookie eligibility remains intact after last September’s debut; he’s ranked Boston’s No. 4 prospect.
