Both coaches have experience working with quarterbacks, zero ties to New England and now bring the team’s ongoing search to 11 candidates.

Kubiak is closing on his first season with the 49ers, who hired him after he spent the 2022 season as the Broncos’ passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach. While Denver’s pass offense struggled mightily that year, the Vikings’ offense ranked in the top half of the league every season while Kubiak served as their offensive coordinator from 2019-21. Under former Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer, Kubiak helped run a version of the widely popular Shanahan offense and also worked as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

Prior to landing in Minnesota, he coached Broncos quarterbacks from 2016-18, and made his league debut as the Vikings’ assistant wide receivers coach from 2013-14. He is the son of former Denver head coach Gary Kubiak.

Turner, the son of longtime NFL offensive coordinator Scott Turner, just finished his first season in Las Vegas. He is a 12-year NFL coach, who previously worked as the offensive coordinator in Washington (2020-22) and quarterbacks coach for the Panthers (2018-19). Turner’s offenses in Washington never cracked the league’s top 20 in points scored.

His earlier stops included a three-year stint in Minnesota as the quarterbacks coach (2014-16) and working as the Browns’ wide receivers coach in 2013. That season. Josh Gordon became the first Browns player ever to lead the NFL in receiving yards at 1,646.

The Patriots’ offensive coordinator search now includes eight available candidates, with Shane Waldron, Dan Pitcher and Zac Robinson all accepting offensive coordinator positions elsewhere.

That leaves Rams tight ends coach Nick Caley, an ex-Patriots assistant, ex-Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, ex-Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, Lions pass game coordinator Tanner Engstrand, 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury, Kubiak and Turner among those being considered by new Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo.
