Oh, For Sleet’s Sake! Finalists announced in MnDOT’s annual Name A Snowplow contest; voting open until Sunday

After the success last year of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” and the “Eras Tour” movie, it’s no surprise that two of the finalists in the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s “Name a Snowplow” contest involve the music sensation.

Among the 50 finalists in this year’s contest: Taylor Drift and Flake it Off.

Voting will remain open through Sunday. Participants may vote only once through a ballot posted on MnDOT’s website and can select up to eight of their favorite names.

Eight snowplows – one for each MnDOT district in the state – will be named.

More than 8,000 entries for this year’s contest were received. MnDOT officials said they considered “uniqueness, frequency of submissions, Minnesota-specific ideas, and names that would be easily identifiable and understandable to most audiences” when picking the finalists.

This is the fourth year MnDOT has held a “Name a Snowplow” contest. Last year’s winners were: Yer a Blizzard, Harry; Blizzo; Clearopathtra; Better Call Salt; Han Snowlo; Blader Tot Hotdish; Scoop! There it is, and Sleetwood Mac.

In addition to the 24 named snowplows selected through the previous annual contests, MnDOT staff also have helped to name three additional snowplows: two in Ojibwe – Giiwedin (The North Wind) and Goonodaabaan (Snow Vehicle) and one in Dakota – Icamna (Blizzard) “in acknowledgement of the highways the state plows adjacent to tribal lands,” MnDOT officials said.
