Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury moves into second place on NHL career wins list

As a boy growing up in hockey-made Quebec, Marc-Andre Fleury always wanted to be a hockey player. But not just any hockey player, a goaltender.

“I wasn’t scoring enough as a forward, so I thought it was a little more boring,” he said. “When I played on the street, I played mostly forward. I didn’t like that.”

Fleury didn’t just become a goaltender. He became one of the best of all time. On Monday night, he earned his 552nd career victory to pass Patrick Roy, a childhood idol, for second on the NHL’s career wins list.

In a 5-0 victory over the New York Islanders at Xcel Energy Center, Fleury made xx saves in his 74th career shutout and finally passed Roy, the Montreal Candiens’ goaltender when Fleury was growing up in nearby Sorel, Quebec.

“Big Canadiens fans,” Fleury said. “He brought in (the) butterfly (style) when I started to learn that stuff — around 13, 14 years old. So, I was trying to play like him a bit.”

Joel Eriksson Ek score twice, and Mats Zuccarello, Connor Dewar and Marcus Foligno added one apiece as the Wild snapped a six-game home losing streak, and won for just the second time since Dec. 27.
