Officer assaulted by suspect
A West Hennepin Police Officer was assaulted by Lance Schendel, 23, when officers responded to a mental health call.
On June 15 he was charged with fourth degree felony assault against a police officer. He was released on bond June 16.
An officer was dispatched to 1400 block of Halgren Road in Maple Plain on June 12 at 10:45 a.m. Schendel’s sister called 911 because Schendel was acting strangely and was mumbling to himself, according to police.
As the West Hennepin police officer arrived and approached the rear of the residence, Schendel began to flee on foot, according to police.
The officer told Schendel to stop and police officer started pursing him across the yard. As the officer went to take Schendel into custody, Schendel turned and struck the officer in his face with a closed fist. The officer was able to take Schendel into custody after being assaulted.
The officer was transported to Ridgeview Hospital emergency room and was treated for his injuries. The officer was later released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Officers from Orono and Medina police departments responded to assist West Hennepin police officers.
