Hub in for rainy, warmer New Year’s Day

The Boston area is set to kick of the 2025 new year with warmer temperatures and some rain this week, according National Weather Service forecasts.

“Going into New Year’s Day definitely chances of rain start to move in,” said NWS meteorologist Candice Hrencecin. “And then its likely to be rainy the whole day as well.”

The New Year’s Eve holiday is forecasted to be significantly warmer than typical seasonal temperatures in Boston, with a high in the low 50s and low in the low 40s Tuesday night.

Rain is expected to move in to hit the revelries New Year’s Eve night, mainly after 1 a.m., NWS forecasts. A light south wind is also expected to cool off party goers out Tuesday night.

On New Year’s Day, the higher chance of rain is expected to remain, hitting the Boston area mainly through around 4 p.m., according to the NWS forecast. The Boston area could also see wind gusts as strong as 20 mph Wednesday.

Highs on the first day of the year are expected to reach the high 40s, according to the NWS, while the low Wednesday night is predicted to dip into the low 30s.

The Boston area’s seasonal temperatures around New Year’s are typically within the 20s and 30s, though the city also saw a more moderately warm holiday in 2024 as well.

The week is expected to kick off  even higher temperatures on Monday.

“(Monday) will be warmer, with mid-50s for the high,” said Hrencecin. “And then a cold front will move through, so the low will come down to the 30s.”

Boston temperatures are expected to drop further on Thursday headed into the weekend. For the later half of the week through the weekend, highs are forecasted to range in the 30s with nighttime lows are forecasted to dip into the 20s.

Skies are expected to remain mostly clear and sunny from Thursday on. Winds may pick up even further Thursday and Friday, reaching high gusts up to 29 mph.
