Field hockey
As part of over 20 rule changes discussed and voted on in the MIAA field hockey committee’s virtual meeting Wednesday morning, members voted largely in favor – 9-1 (one abstention) – of mandating masks to be worn on defensive penalty corners.
The change highlighted a long line of proposals to be voted on and reported to the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) the same day. In the proposal, it also opened the mask options to the typical plastic face shield most teams have already invested in, or gridded cages contoured to players’ faces. It will not affect players’ option to wear protective goggles during field play, which some teams have done on a large scale recently.
Members spoke for over 18 minutes on the proposal, but conversation focused more on the types of masks allowed and the semantics of how deep down the field they can be worn, rather than the actual mandate on the plays. The change is notable considering some significant facial injuries sustained during corners over the last couple years.
“The prevailing sentiment is that we want, on penalty corners, for (players) to wear masks,” said field hockey liason and MIAA deputy director Sherry Bryant.
Rule changes took the vast majority of the two-hour meeting, with other key agenda points pushed to the committee’s next meeting on Feb. 6.
Other signature proposals voted on were mostly denied, such as eliminating a coach’s 90-second timeout availability and stopping the clock for penalty corners.
Substitutions during penalty corners will remain available immediately after insertion, rather than the proposal to change availability to the completion of a corner. Expired-time corners at the end of a game, of which the result doesn’t impact winner, will conclude after fended off or another violation is determined.
Bryant also introduced Terri Pillsbury as MIAA tournament director, and Manchester-Essex athletic director Cami Molinare as assistant.
