Gophers defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman has signed a two-year contract extension through the 2026 season, the school shared Saturday.

Hetherman will remain at Minnesota as his former school, Rutgers, has a coordinator opening with Joe Harasymiak leaving the role to be the head coach at Massachusetts last week. Hetherman was the Scarlet Knights’ linebacker coach before improving Minnesota’s defense in 2024.

“Fired up to have Corey Hetherman leading our defense for two more years,” the Gophers football account posted on social media Saturday.

After a dip last season, the Gophers were eighth in the nation in total defense (290 yards per game) and 13th in the nation in scoring defense (17.3 points per game).

Gophers coach P.J. Fleck told the Pioneer Press near the end of the season that Hetherman has been “fantastic” and had “exceeded my expectations.”

Contract details on Hetherman’s new deal were not immediately available and will be subject to approval from the U’s Board of Regents at a future meeting.

Hetherman received $850,000 in annual compensation when he joined Minnesota in January 2024, including $345,000 in base salary and $505,000 in supplemental pay.
