UK November 2024: Mini Cooper #1, Peugeot 3008 cracks Top 10, BEVs up 58.4%

The Peugeot 3008 ranks inside the UK Top 10 for the very first time.

153,610 new cars hit UK roads in November, a -1.9% year-on-year decline and the 3rd drop in the past 4 months. The year-to-date tally remains in positive however at +2.8% to 1,811,992. Looking at sales by powertrain, both petrol (-17.7% to 70,317) and diesel (-10.1% to 9,434) plunge, while PHEV (-1.2% to 15,687) and HEV (-3.6% to 19,591) limit their fall. The hero of the month is BEVs, shooting up 58.4% to 38,581 and 25.1% share vs. 15.6% a year ago in November 2023. This is in part due to heavy discounts. Year-to-date, diesel is off -12.6% to 116,044, petrol down -3.2% to 959,675, but BEVs soar 17.9% to 338,314 and 18.7% share vs. 16.3% over the same period in 2023, PHEVs are up 19.6% to 154,462 and HEVs up 9.6% to 243,499.

Private sales again disappoint in November at -3.3% to 58,496 and 38.1% share vs. 38.7% last year, while fleet sales edge down -1.1% to 91,993 and 59.9% share vs. 59.4% a year ago. Business sales are up 5.2% to a limited 3,121 and 2% share vs. 1.9%. So far in 2024, private sales fall -9.1% to 701,964 and 38.7% share vs. 43.8% over the same period in 2023, in contrast fleet sales are up 12.9% to 1,071,049 and 59.1% share vs. 53.8% and business sales drop -4.2% to 38,979 and 2.2% vs. 2.3%.

Volkswagen (-7.2%) remains in the brands charts first place with 8.1% share vs. 8.5% so far this year. BMW (-11.9%) struggles but stays at #2 and even snaps the #2 year-to-date spot off Audi (-28.9%) in great difficulty this month. Mercedes (+7.7%) is up three spots on October to #3 while Ford (-32.1%) crashes at #5. Nissan (+4.7%) gains 6 ranks on last month to #6 as does MG (+8.2%) to #7. This is the brand’s highest ranking, also hit in January 2023 and May 2024. Hyundai (+13.3%) delivers the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 but is down to 4.7% share, below its YTD level. Further down, Tesla (+176.6%), Mini (+43.7%), Dacia (+49.2%) and Volvo (+35.9%) stand out. Vauxhall (-47.7%) freefalls to #17, the brand’s lowest ever UK ranking.

Model-wise, the Mini Cooper (+25.1%) soars to score its 2nd ever monthly win after November 2021. This is however not enough to break into the YTD Top 10. The Nissan Qashqai (-8.3%) is up six spots on last month to #2 but disappoints year-to-date. The Tesla Model Y (+236.3%) spots spectacular growth to return inside the Top 10 at #3. It also advances to #9 YTD vs. #5 over the Full Year 2023. Leader last month, the Kia Sportage (+9.7%) is relegated to #4 and is now just 84 sales below the Ford Puma (-28.5%) for the race to Year end pole position. Excellent scores for the Volvo XC40 (+20.6%), MG HS (+16.3%) and VW Tiguan (+14.5%). The hero of the month is the Peugeot 3008 cracking the UK Top 10 for the first time at #9. As a reminder it ranked outside the FY2023 Top 50.
