Week 5 Sweet 16: Billerica survives a wild offensive affair

There aren’t many times where a football team gives up 54 points and walks off the field with a victory.

Friday night was one of those rare expectations.

Billerica and Haverhill put on one of those exhibitions of offensive football which won’t soon be forgotten. When the final whistle blew, Billerica left Haverhill Stadium with an exhausting 83-54 victory to improve to 2-2. The teams combined for 1,190 yards as four different players rushed for more than 125 yards in the game.

“Every time I looked at the scoreboard during the game, I thought I was dreaming. Actually, it was more like a nightmare,” said Billerica coach Duane Sigsbury. “Thankfully, we have real good players like (quarterback) Steven Gentile and (running back) Judd Dorival, they are as good as they come. We needed them out there because every time we scored, they kept scoring.”

Even though Billerica scored at least 20 points in each of the four quarters (I have to believe that’s never been done in state history), the Indians entered the fourth quarter with just a two-score lead at 62-48. While Gentile and Dorival combined to rush for an absurd 451 yards and 10 touchdowns on 38 carries, they had all sorts of trouble trying to contain Haverhill quarterback James Farrell.

One of the more unsung signal callers in the state, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior threw for 247 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 128 yards and five scores.

“He’s a very, very good player,” Sigsbury said. “He’s a big, strong kid who is tough. That was the best game they’ve played all season, they really played us very tough.”

As good as Farrell was, Haverhill had no answers for Gentile, who amassed five of his touchdowns in the second half as Billerica finally pulled away. As much as Sigsbury was disappointed in the 54 points his defense allowed, he preferred to focus on the positives.

“We did break a school record for points and that’s something people will be talking about for a long time,” Sigsbury said. “I like the way we ran the ball, our offensive line is getting better and we will be getting Thomas Arsenault back soon.”

New entry to the 200 Club

The 200-win club welcomed a new member this past weekend as Auburn’s Jeff Cormier became the 60th coach in state history to win 200 games as Auburn defeated Fitchburg, 42-13. The head coach of the Rockets since 1999, Cormier has an impressive 200-84-0 record.

Cormier is the third coach to reach the milestone this year, the others being Tim Morris of Melrose and David Woods of Bishop Fenwick. The list could be adding a new member soon as Wachusett’s Mike Dubzinski is two wins away from 200. Others who have at least 190 wins include Milton’s Steve Dembowski (193), West Boylston’s Mike Ross and Tewksbury’s Brian Aylward (both at 192).
