Paul Reiser, Colm Meaney reveal ‘The Problem With People’

There’s a bit of blarney, gorgeous scenery and plenty of sheep in the warring cousins Irish comedy “The Problem with People.”

Paul Reiser is the American cousin contacted by Colm Meaney’s Irish cousin to come visit the Old Sod to make peace in a historic feud before Meaney’s Da dies.

Reiser (“Mad About You,” “Stranger Things”) not only stars but spent years collaborating on the script with Wally Marzano-Lesnevich.

“All I knew was,” Reiser, 68, said in a joint Zoom interview with Meaney, 71, “I want to go to Ireland. I thought, What’s the story? And we finally came up with this family feud as the driving force of the story: These two guys who, as well intended and as loving as they may be, can’t stop tripping over each other and their worst instincts.”

With the cousins’ differences defining their frequently warring relationship, did Reiser intend to reference realities around the world today?

“Yes. That was the key. That’s the, forgive the expression, the message. That’s the meat of the story and now we can just have fun with these two idiots being very human and flawed.

“But the fact is they’re trying to do something that is admittedly small. The father says it, ‘We can’t solve the world’s problems, but maybe we can at least clean up our family.’ Seems like a reasonable task. Yet we can’t, don’t, manage to do it.

“That’s what we hope people take away from the movie after watching a fun romp of some hopefully likable people.”

Meaney, Dublin-born, discovered Irish audiences specifically see the film as being about the long-standing divisions in this divided island.

“The peace process in Ireland, it’s so long ago, 30 years since it came into being. And when we had all the Q&As after screenings, this came up.  You could point to the fact that we can solve problems. People can get on, people can get together.

“But it’s on a very small scale and references are usually to do with world events. Now, seeing the finished product, it has a direct reference to the situation in Ireland as well. Which is wonderful. It means it’s a relevant topic for the film.”

When he’s not filming Meaney retreats to Mallorca, Spain. As a self-described “city boy,” what’s his relationship with sheep, the film’s nonchalant scene stealers?

“It’s very interesting because in Mallorca my lovely wife has rescued four sheep. We now have four sheep who live on the land with us!

“They’re not kept out there by us but they actually come to the door every evening around 7:30 until my wife serves them. So I would say my relationship is not particularly close.”
