New 2027 BMW X5 & iX5 Roll into Town: The Art of Eloquence
Experienced Kimatni D. Rawlins | Automotive Rhythms
When BMW unveiled the first X5 at Plant Spartanburg in 1999, the automotive world inherited a new species of utility dubbed the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). Twenty-seven years and four generations later, the Bavarians have returned to that same South Carolina soil with the most significant and daring X5 model iteration to date.
The BMW X5 Premise
Embodied by five generations and five powertrains, the technologically profound 2027 BMW X5 is stylistically assertive, with its chiseled, angularly sculpted physique, and is ripe with thoughtful BMW amenities and digitization. Moreover, it’s enhanced by NEUE KLASSE innovations and clever operational features such as the slim, double-X headlights, the ability to open the optional electrically powered doors by swiping your hand across the BMW Winglet handle, and the driver’s door closing from inside by depressing the brake pedal. Eleven exterior hues are available, including the new Grey Pine Metallic and Vancouver Green Metallic to extend personalization further, while wheel options scale from standard 21” alloys to exquisite, first-for-X5 23s. Visually, the 2027 X5 is presented by a commanding stance, muscular wheel arches, and assertive proportions.
The Power of the Letter X
To launch the evolved and elevated 2027 X5, BMW held a grand event dubbed “Home of X” at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, where the BMW X sports utility vehicles are built. There were hundreds in attendance, including media, BMW employees, and government officials. The audience also witnessed joyous entertainment from the CommUnity ATL Choir, an Atlanta-based performance ensemble founded by Deanna Dixon (a former Beyoncé background singer) featuring formidable voices from both veteran vocalists and passionate amateurs.
In addition to the X5 showcase, BMW unveiled a powerful, striking new “Home of X” sculpture outside the BMW Zentrum in South Carolina. Plant Spartanburg, where 1,500 vehicles are assembled daily, is the global foundation for BMW X vehicles, and this motivating monument immortalizes that legacy. It’s a bold tribute to the birthplace of the SAV and BMW’s lasting commitment to America, BMW owners, and the thousands of dedicated personnel who build X5s, X7s, X6s, and more. More importantly, the “Home of X” shrine tells its story through three connected themes: community, territory, and technology. Together, they represent a place where people, purpose, and innovation have molded every BMW X built since inception.
“The goal was to create something that immediately communicates the significance of Plant Spartanburg,” said Julia De Bono, CEO/Studio Director of Designworks. “We wanted to transform the BMW X into a physical experience that people can engage with.”
Five Diverse Drivetrain Options
For the first time in the X5’s storied tenure, BMW aficionados can choose from five distinct powertrain architectures for their diverse performance needs. The options include a 48V mild-hybrid inline-six, a rear-wheel-drive configuration, a plug-in hybrid, the inaugural all-electric BMW iX5, and the forthcoming iX5 Hydrogen model, BMW’s first production hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. The all-electric SAV is boosted by 570 rechargeable horses that can gallop an estimated 435 miles.
The X5 40 xDrive anchors the lineup with BMW’s latest 3.0-liter inline-6, now producing 394 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque through a new turbocharger that is paired with 48V mild-hybrid assistance. This setup delivers up to 148 lb-ft of electric boost and 17 additional horsepower on demand. The entry MSRP is $72,100 before the $1,450 destination charge.
Next up is the X5 50e xDrive PHEV, combining that revised 6-cylinder with a 194-horsepower synchronous electric motor for a combined 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of system torque. In this scenario, the X5 covers 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Its 26.5 kWh lithium-ion battery delivers an estimated 44 miles of pure-electric range, approximately 15 percent beyond the outgoing generation. Theoretically, you could drive on all EV miles if the X5’s usage is for local transport. Pricing opens at $77,500.
At the vanguard stands the BMW iX5 60 xDrive. Its 6th-generation BMW eDrive architecture employs an 800V system, 144 kWh net usable energy from a cell-to-pack design utilizing novel 120mm cylindrical cells and two motors (one at each axle) generating a combined 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque. As stated, range is estimated at 435 miles while DC fast-charging at up to 460 kW replenishes 10% to 80% of the SAV’s energy in 22 minutes or adds approximately 170 miles in ten minutes. Bidirectional charging enables Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, or Vehicle-to-Vehicle capability. Practically speaking, if power goes out at your house, the iX5 can restore electricity so food doesn’t go to waste and World Cup games don’t get missed! Expect a starting price of $79,800.
From Fourth to Fifth: An Evolution in the Making
Context matters when distinguishing the present from the past in the formation of the latest BMW family utility. When I first took the wheel of the 4th-generation 2019 X5 through the backroads of Georgia, where BMW first launched the model two decades prior, the SAV announced itself with authority. My then Phytonic Blue xDrive40i model, armed with a TwinPower Turbo inline-six producing 335 horsepower, darted from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds with what we described at the time as “ease of grace.” The iDrive 7 infotainment, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound, and BMW’s pioneering Off-Road Package with its four terrain modes felt genuinely revolutionary for the segment.
The 2019 representation established that the X5 could be both urbane and adventurous. Yet for all its brilliance, that generation asked customers to choose between analog capability and digital sophistication — a scenario the Neue Klasse era resolves entirely. The 5th-generation X5 improves upon its predecessor so drastically that it goes beyond the DNA that represented that predecessor, almost as if it’s an entirely new SAV rendition.
Reimagined NEUE KLASSE-Inspired Cockpit
BMW NEUE KLASSE intersperses the cabin with comfort and digitalization from the BMW Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X. BMW Panoramic Vision projects driving data across the full width of the lower windshield, the multifunction steering wheel illuminates active controls, and slate is introduced as a genuine decorative surface for the first time and pairs with the optional crystal glass gear selectors and volume controls. The optional BMW Passenger Screen, a 14.6” full-HD display with built-in distraction monitoring, arrives in the X5 for the first time. However, I have never witnessed any of my passengers use this screen enough to garner the additional cost.
Plant Spartanburg: The Origin Story of X SAVs
In 2022, BMW committed $1.7 billion to South Carolina to expand Plant Spartanburg and build a new high-voltage battery facility in Woodruff. The payoff has come to fruition. America’s largest BMW plant is fully prepared for today’s electric era.
While attending the global announcement at Plant Spartanburg, a cadre of X5s was driven to the front and center as the smaller set of glowing BMW Kidney grilles drew the audience’s attention. Specifically, BMW confirmed the iX5 EV will be the first fully electric BMW assembled in the United States beginning in late 2026. At the precipice of BMW’s electrification journey, the iX5 60 xDrive features new electric drive and digital architecture, as well as Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy tires, built to conserve energy and prioritize rolling resistance without sacrificing sporty handling.
During a walking tour of the factory, I witnessed X vehicles being built in real time through complex tasking that sees various permutations (including powertrains) of X utilities produced on the same line, whether it’s an X3 and then an X5 or an X5 M and then an X7. The data foundation is sourced from AI that brings the BMW Virtual Factory or Metaverse to life. Humans, stationary robotics, and robodogs work in unison on the manufacturing processes at Plant Spartanburg, which ships SAVs to 120 countries. V2 humanoids supplied by Figure are also on site and undergoing basic training for repetitive tasks, such as stocking the parts bin. During a demonstration, the human-shaped and AI-driven robot walked slowly to its assignment and gingerly performed the task. BMW is awaiting more advanced V3 figures. Yet, to be perfectly clear, I am not a proponent of humanoids in our homes, schools, or workplaces!
Consumer Market Arrival
The 2027 BMW X5’s arrival is scheduled as follows. The X5 40 xDrive launches in October 2026. The RWD X5 40, the 50e xDrive PHEV, and the iX5 60 xDrive follow in Q1 2027. Later in 2027, the Hydrogen iX5 will arrive. For the performance-thirsty customers, a V8-powered M Performance will hit the scene later in 2027. Lineup pricing ranges from $69,800 (X5 40) to $79,800 (iX5 60 xDrive), plus the $1,450 destination and delivery fee.
The 2027 BMW X5 is more than an evolution; it’s a technological reckoning.
