Chevrolet is bringing serious firepower to this year’s Indianapolis 500, naming the 2026 Corvette ZR1X as the official pace car for the 110th running of the race on May 24 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That alone would be enough to grab attention, but the ZR1X is not just another ceremonial lead car. Chevrolet is positioning it as a true American hypercar, and on paper it has the credentials to back that up with 1,250 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and performance numbers that put it in genuinely rare air.

What makes the moment feel especially fitting is how closely the car’s story lines up with the event itself. The Indy 500 has always been about speed, spectacle, and Americana, and the ZR1X seems built to lean into all three. This special pace car livery was created to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, with a stars-and-stripes theme and a two-tone finish that shows Arctic White on one side and Admiral Blue on the other. It is dramatic without feeling overdone, which is exactly how a Corvette should show up for a stage like this.

Underneath the patriotic graphics is a machine that sounds almost absurd for pace car duty. The ZR1X combines a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 sending 1,064 horsepower to the rear wheels with a 186-horsepower electric motor up front, giving it a combined output of 1,250 horsepower. Chevrolet says it can hit 60 mph in under two seconds and run all the way to 233 mph, numbers that blur the line between road car and race-adjacent weapon. There is also a nice local touch to the whole thing. Indiana University head football coach Curt Cignetti has been named honorary pace car driver, a nod to IU Football’s undefeated national championship season. That gives the event a little extra home-state pride and makes the ZR1X’s appearance feel even more connected to the broader sports energy surrounding the race. Chevrolet and Indianapolis Motor Speedway clearly understand that the pace car is part performance statement, part tradition, and part theater, and this year’s choice hits all three notes pretty well.
