Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS Manthey Sets a Stunning Nürburgring Time but Ford Steals the Spotlight

Porsche went back to the Nürburgring with a very serious mission, and by any normal standard, it absolutely delivered. The 992.1-generation 911 GT3 RS fitted with the Manthey kit ripped around the Nordschleife in 6:45.389, trimming nearly four seconds from the standard car’s already wild benchmark. That is the kind of improvement that says everything about how focused this package really is. When a GT3 RS gets even sharper, lighter on its feet, and more aggressive through the fast stuff, the result is never subtle.

A big part of that performance comes down to what Manthey brings to the table. Porsche’s Nürburgring specialist has a reputation for turning already brilliant 911s into something even more dialed in, and this latest result only reinforces that. With suspension and aerodynamic upgrades playing a central role, the car was reportedly able to stay flat-out through sections that push even elite machinery to the limit. That is not just a bragging point for the spec sheet crowd. It is a reminder that Porsche still knows exactly how to extract speed from a car without losing the essence of what makes it special in the first place.

Of course, it helps when Jörg Bergmeister is the one doing the driving. Porsche has long trusted him for its biggest Nürburgring efforts, and this lap once again showed why. There is a certain rhythm to a proper Porsche ring run that always seems to blend engineering precision with driver confidence, and this one had all of it. For Porsche fans, it should have been one of those chest-out moments where the brand gets to remind everyone that the naturally aspirated 911 formula still has plenty of fight left in it.

The problem for Porsche is that the celebration barely had time to breathe before Ford barged into the conversation. On the same day Porsche and Manthey were enjoying headlines for that 6:45.389 lap, Ford revealed its new Mustang GTD Competition had gone even quicker with a 6:40.835. That instantly shifted the narrative. Instead of the Porsche’s lap standing alone as the big story, it became part of a same-day performance duel that left the Mustang wearing the louder crown. That has to sting a bit, especially considering just how impressive the Porsche’s run really was on its own.

There is an important distinction here, though. The Manthey-equipped GT3 RS is listed as a sports car on the official Nürburgring charts, while the Mustang GTD Competition falls into the prototype or pre-production category. That does matter, and enthusiasts will absolutely debate it. Still, that is part of what makes this whole thing fun. Porsche proved once again that the 911 GT3 RS remains one of the sharpest track weapons on the planet, while Ford showed it is not playing around with the GTD program. In the end, Porsche left the Green Hell with a phenomenal lap, even if Ford made sure it did not enjoy the spotlight for very long.
