Driver shot, killed by St. Louis County Sheriff deputies
DULUTH — A man was shot and killed by two St. Louis County Sheriff deputies after fleeing a traffic stop on Tuesday night.
A deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving on Grand Avenue and 59th Avenue West at about 9:40 p.m., according to a news release issued early Wednesday morning from the sheriff’s office. After the driver fled, the vehicle was stopped at the 7900 block of Grand Avenue.
Two deputies opened fire on and struck the driver, described as an adult male. First aid was provided, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were physically injured.
According to the release, a handgun was located in the driver’s seat area of the vehicle. The Duluth Police Department said in a Wednesday morning news release that a connection between this incident and a Tuesday homicide in the Lincoln Park neighborhood is under investigation.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was requested to investigate the incident. Grand Avenue was closed to traffic from 78th Avenue West to 83rd Avenue West on Wednesday morning and reopened before 10 a.m., according to a news release from the city of Duluth.
Information regarding the circumstances of the incident and the identity of the man killed was not immediately provided.
