Members of the Maynard Fire and Police Department rescued a dog from a frozen pond late Tuesday night.

First responders received a call around 9 p.m. from a pet owner that their dog Rufus had fallen into a hole in the ice at Mill Pond.

In a video shared by the departments, two firefighters who were tethered to ropes walked across the pond to the hole. One firefighter jumps in to lift Rufus from the water, while the other pulls the pup onto the ice.

Rufus gives a little shake, and all three walk back to shore.

While the firefighters performed the ice rescue, Maynard Police used a drone to guide them.

“Within ten minutes, Rufus was pulled out of the water and back in his owner’s arms,” a statement from the departments said. “He was able to return home and enjoy a cozy night’s sleep with no serious injuries.”

“A pet falling through the water, in these freezing conditions, is any pet owner’s worst nightmare,” Fire Chief Angela Lawless said in the statement. “This could’ve been far more serious if Rufus was in the water for a long period of time, but our crews made sure that would not be the case. We are confident Rufus will make a full recovery.”
