Two dead after a plane crashes onto I-195 in Dartmouth
Two people are dead after a small aircraft crashed onto a highway in southern Massachusetts before bursting into flames.
According to police, the plane crashed around 8:15 a.m. on Monday after landing on the median of I-195 in Dartmouth. The crash, police say, led to a “fire on the ground.” It appears the plane may have been attempting to land, according to an early morning release from the Massachusetts State Police.
“Preliminary information indicates the plane may have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, though it does not appear that the pilot provided the Airport with a flight plan or the number of souls aboard the aircraft,” the MSP said in their release.
MassDOT officials took to social media to announce closure of I-195 westbound and restrictions on the eastbound side.
“In #Dartmouth, I-195 westbound is closed at exit 19 due to plane crash. Left lane closure also in place on I-195 eastbound,” they wrote.
The state police say they have no information regarding the identities of the deceased or the number of people on board. The Bristol County State Police Detective Unit, Crime Scene Services Section, and Field Services were on scene Monday morning alongside first responders from New Bedford.
