Christian Gonzalez has ‘a chance’ to return vs. Steelers, Mike Vrabel says

FOXBORO — Could Christian Gonzalez make his season debut this Sunday against the Steelers?

That’s a possibility, according to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

“It’s a chance,” Vrabel said Monday when asked about the status of his injured star cornerback. “There’s a chance that a lot of things could happen. It’s Monday, and we’ll figure out how he progresses along the week. We’ll see what he can do and have him do what he can do.”

Gonzalez, a second-team All-Pro last season, suffered a hamstring injury on July 28 and has not practiced or played since. Vrabel said the 23-year-old is “continuing to improve, working hard and trying to get back.”

Alex Austin replaced Gonzalez in the lineup for New England’s first two games, starting opposite Carlton Davis III with Marcus Jones manning the slot. Austin played every defensive snap in the Patriots’ Week 1 loss to the Raiders, then was on the field for 82% of snaps in Sunday’s 33-27 victory over the Dolphins.

Austin struggled against Miami’s speedy receivers, allowing six catches on seven targets for 97 yards and a touchdown, per Pro Football Focus. He was in coverage on a 47-yard completion to Tyreek Hill on third-and-13.

Charles Woods served as New England’s fourth cornerback in the win, logging two snaps on defense and 16 on special teams.

Vrabel also offered an update on defensive coordinator Terrell Williams, who was away from the team last week while he dealt with a health-related issue. Inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr called defensive plays against the Dolphins in Williams’ absence.

“I think Terrell is in good spirits,” Vrabel said. “Terrell will be around. I don’t quite fully know in what capacity, but he will be around and involved, so we’ll continue to just make sure there’s a good plan for everything that happens, just like we always have been.”

The Patriots will hold their first Week 3 practice on Wednesday.
