Celtics rule out Jaylen Brown for multiple games with knee injury

Jaylen Brown will miss at least the first two games of the Celtics’ Western Conference road trip as he deals with a knee injury.

Brown was diagnosed with a bone bruise with posterior impingement in his right knee, the team announced Friday. He was ruled out for Friday’s game in Utah and Sunday’s in Portland and will be reevaluated on Monday.

The Celtics star also sat out Tuesday’s home victory over Brooklyn and last Friday’s win at Miami with what the team called a right knee posterior impingement. He played Saturday in Brooklyn but exited that game with a back issue.

The four-time All-Star also has dealt with shoulder, hip and ankle injuries this season, and has admitted after multiple games that he was playing through pain.

After the Celtics defeated the Jazz on March 10, Brown said he “didn’t feel (his) best physically” during the 114-108 win at TD Garden. He said after a January win over the Los Angeles Clippers that he was “just pushing through.”

“I think this is definitely the rougher part physically during the season,” Brown said on Jan. 23. “I’ve had some injuries and things like that, but I try to make myself available every night. I’ll make no excuses; it is what it is. But I’m a little beat up.”

With the Celtics all but locked into the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, head coach Joe Mazzulla will have little motivation to play Brown over the final 11 games following his reevaluation if he is not fully healthy. Brown does have a personal incentive to return, however, as he needs to make at least nine more appearances to reach the 65-game threshold to qualify for All-NBA and All-Defensive consideration.

Brown fell short of both honors last season but was second-team All-NBA in 2023. The 2024 NBA Finals MVP has appeared in 56 games this season, averaging 22.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and career highs in assists (4.7) and steals (3.1) per game.

The Celtics also ruled out seldom-used forward Xavier Tillman (left knee joint sprain) for Friday’s game.
