Big Ten wrestling: Gable Stevenson makes history with fourth conference title
Minnesota heavyweight Gable Stevenson won his fourth Big Ten championship on Sunday, becoming the first conference heavyweight to win four titles and just the 19th wrestler overall to accomplish the feat.
The Gophers’ Vern Gagne also did it with wins in 1944 and 194-49.
As a team, Minnesota finished in fourth place with 108.5 points, equaling its best finish under head coach Brandon Eggum. Penn State won the team title, followed by Nebraska and Iowa.
Minnesota’s Max McEnelly took the first loss of his college career by finishing second to Penn State’s Carter Starocci. Vance VomBaur was runner-up at 141 pounds for the Gophers. Other Minnesota finishes on Sunday included Andrew Sparks (fourth at 174 pounds), Isaiah Salazar (fourth, 197) and Tommy Askey (fifth, 157).
Eight Gophers have clinched a spot in the NCAA championships, set for March 20-22 in Philadelphia, with at-large bids still to be announced.
