Missing Massachusetts woman found dead in freezing lake on Christmas

A missing woman who was last seen walking her dog in a nature preserve was found dead in a freezing lake on Christmas, according to officials.

Danvers woman Owen Kasozi, 30, was found dead in Beverly’s Wenham Lake on Wednesday, the Essex DA’s office and Beverly Police reported following a search with many agencies.

“On behalf of the Beverly Police Department, I would like to pass along our sincere condolences to the family of Owen Kasozi,” Beverly Police Chief John LeLacheur said in a statement.

“I would also like to thank all the first responders for being able to give the family some degree of closure in the wake of this difficult search process,” the chief added.

Kasozi was last seen entering the J.C. Phillips Nature Preserve in Beverly near Wenham Lake at about 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and did not return — triggering a search that involved Beverly Police, Beverly Fire, the Massachusetts State Police detective unit assigned to the DA’s office, the MSP Air Wing unit, and the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council.

Officials believe that Kasozi was walking her dog in the nature preserve on Route 97, a popular dog-walking location, before her disappearance. The dog was found without its owner Tuesday night in Topsfield.

“Authorities suspect that Kasozi fell into the freezing lake yesterday and was unable to extricate herself,” officials said in a statement.

No foul play is suspected. However, the official cause of death will be determined by an investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

“This is not the search outcome that anyone was hoping for,” Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said in a statement. “We appreciate the efforts of all our law enforcement partners who worked diligently over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to locate Owen Kasozi. Our thoughts are with her family as they begin to cope with this painful loss.”
