Editorial: Biden dealing blows to his own base

The youth bloc of Democratic voters is getting hit with a bucket of cold reality from the Biden Administration as recent moves by the president undermine issues they deemed important enough to champion Kamala Harris for a White House win.

First up, the Biden administration is withdrawing a proposed set of regulations that aimed to improve access to contraception by narrowing the ability of employers to opt out of covering birth control for their employees, The Hill reported.

The news dropped Monday via a notice in the Federal Register that the Department of Health and Human Services was rescinding the regulations, which would have prohibited employers from claiming an exemption based on “non-religious moral objections” to the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate.

Biden was all in when he announced the proposed move in October: “At a time when contraception access is under attack, Vice President Harris and I are resolute in our commitment to expanding access to quality, affordable contraception. We believe that women in every state must have the freedom to make deeply personal health care decisions, including the right to decide if and when to start or grow their family.”

Access to contraception was just one of the many things touted as being “under attack” should Donald Trump win the election, and young women across the country were urged to vote to save their reproductive rights (and democracy).

Contraceptive rights aren’t such a big deal post-election, apparently. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and other agencies involved said the rules were being withdrawn in order “to focus their time and resources on matters other than finalizing these rules.”

They’ve got other things to do.

This comes on the heels of a White House move to withdraw two major plans to deliver student loan forgiveness.

According to CNBC, the proposed regulations would have allowed the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education to cancel student loans for several groups of borrowers, including those who had been in repayment for decades and others experiencing financial hardship.

The combined policies could have reduced or eliminated the education debts of millions of Americans.

The Education Department wrote in the Federal Register that it was terminating the rulemaking proceeding due to “operational challenges in implementing the proposals.” It said it would “commit its limited operational resources” in these final weeks of the administration “to helping at-risk borrowers return to repayment successfully.”

Donald Trump is getting the blame.

“The Biden administration knew that the proposals for broad student loan forgiveness would have been thwarted by the Trump administration,” said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz.

Trump also stands behind the death penalty, but that didn’t stop Biden from commuting the Death Row sentences for 37 inmates, including child rapists and murderers.

That move was met with outrage in non-Team Biden circles. But progressives fell in step with the “compassion” shown. That none was afforded to the victims and families of the heinous crimes is par for the course, unfortunately.

Now Biden has gone after two issues top of mind with his base, especially the young contingent that Democrats pinned so many hopes on. They can’t be happy.

The question is, will they remain loyal to a team that’s let them down?
