Tom Mulherin’s hockey crystal ball

In this third year of the crystal ball, we’ve seen a lot of different outcomes. Maybe not “it all” – but a lot.

Some weeks, all the favorites win, and most of the coin-flip picks follow the ancient proverb of “tails never fails” for a major boost to our winning percentage. Other weeks, we’re half right with a long list of tight games, and the .500 or so mark doesn’t hurt or help much.

And then there’s weeks like this past one – the very first of the year – when we go winless for either the boys or the girls, and we’re left just shrugging our shoulders.

Hey, that’s hockey, right?

The games in Week 1 were tight and we saw several overtime thrillers come to fruition, which is ultimately what we care about most. But it’s time to pay the piper and point out wins from Falmouth, St. Mary’s, Billerica/Chelmsford, Andover and Burlington helped the crystal ball to an 0-5-2 start on the girls’ side, and the boys from Winchester, Pope Francis and Arlington Catholic made sure we couldn’t pull off .500 for the week.

We’re onto a new week, and it’s one of the best of the year because it’s holiday tournament time.

Monday’s massive slate kicked off winter break in style, and action will only heat up after Christmas Day. The Michael Giordano Christmas Classic, ASG Holiday Classic and Pete Frates Winter Classic feature high-quality competition between state title contenders, and the girls’ Tenney Cup is an eight-team minefield of top teams between Div. 1 and Div. 2. There’s also some non-tournament matchups that deserve equal hype.

Let’s give this another go, and remember, no teams are listed twice in any one week.

LAST WEEK’S RECORD: 4-8-2

OVERALL RECORD: 4-8-2 (.357, ouch)

BOYS

THURSDAY

HANOVER at Boston Latin, 2 p.m. (Michael Giordano Christmas Classic at Murphy Rink) – Two teams that went to TD Garden last year but left with different results. The Div. 4 state runners-up have a chance at redemption for a loss in this tournament’s championship as well if they can win this one.

Lynnfield at WINTHROP, 4 p.m. (Michael Giordano Christmas Classic at Murphy Rink) – The holiday tournament’s reigning champs (Winthrop) gained a little momentum with their first win on Saturday. Sharpening matchup for both. Championship and consolation games are Friday.

FRIDAY

BC High at ST. JOHN’S PREP, 3:10 p.m. (Pete Frates Winter Classic) – The battle of the Eagles is always a big game, and even bigger in a tournament close to the heart. The reigning champs look to fend off a loaded BC High to get to Saturday’s championship in the classic’s 10th year.

ST. JOHN’S (S) at Franklin, 3:30 p.m. (MHL Cup at Loring Arena) – Holding off Arlington Catholic was good prep to face a Franklin team banging on the door for its first win. Pioneers look to repeat as tournament champs. Championship is on Saturday against winner of Marshfield vs. Framingham.

HINGHAM at Braintree, 2 p.m. (ASG Holiday Classic at Canton Ice House) – Harbormen set a strong tone over the reigning Div. 1 state champions on Saturday, look to carry that momentum into the classic’s championship on Sunday if they can get past the Wamps.

Archbishop Williams at XAVERIAN, 4 p.m. (ASG Holiday Classic at Canton Ice House) – Archies shook off the overtime blues with late-game execution against Franklin. Hawks will be an even tougher test in a rematch of last year’s tight matchup.

SATURDAY

Natick at WOBURN, noon – “Battle of unbeatens” doesn’t carry as much weight only a few games in, but here’s a clash of two groups that have come out hot to start the year. This is the biggest test yet for the RedHawks against a Div. 2 title favorite.

Winchester at READING, 6 p.m. – Four games in, the Red and Black haven’t shown much drop off on the scoreboard from last year’s trip to the Div. 1 state final, despite losing a lot of talent. Middlesex League Liberty clashes are almost always must-watches.

GIRLS

THURSDAY

SHREWSBURY at Westford Academy, 10 a.m. (Michael Giordano Christmas Classic) – Both teams are 1-2 against mighty competition, and all six of those games were decided by a goal. A Westford win could mean a rematch with Boston Latin from the season-opener, but the Colonials have the momentum.

FRIDAY

Milton at DUXBURY, 2 p.m. (Tenney Cup) – It’s important to preface that most of the eight teams in this tournament are consensus top-10 teams in the state, and the couple that aren’t are top-20, or right on the fringe. Milton gets a chance to show the two-time reigning Div. 2 champs what it’s made of to rise in those ranks, though Duxbury’s depth is difficult to match.

NOTRE DAME ACADEMY (H) at Bishop Feehan (Tenney Cup), 4 p.m. – Shamrocks already knocked off reigning Div. 1 state champion St. Mary’s. The reigning runners-up are a whole different animal.

Sandwich at MALDEN CATHOLIC (Tenney Cup), 6 p.m. – Two groups with major strengths on defense. The Lancers’ six goals against Burlington on Monday is a big momentum boost.

Archbishop Williams at HINGHAM (Tenney Cup), 8 p.m. – It’s a matchup of two top-5 teams that could go either way. Tails never fails?

SATURDAY

HPNA at Nauset, 3 p.m. – The gauntlet continues for HPNA without any breaks from playing contenders. Major test for the defense against a Nauset attack that’s scored 20 goals in its first four games.

Pope Francis at ST. MARY’S (L), 4 p.m. – Different circumstances from when these two met in the regular season last year. Spartans took a small step back Monday against Boston Latin after two steps forward against PLNR and Archies. A win over Pope Francis’ improved group would be signature.
