BOYS HOCKEY

The Arlington Catholic boys hockey team has shown a habit of pulling through in clutch moments against the toughest opponents early on this year, which St. John’s of Shrewsbury was fully aware of heading into the third period of their nonleague matchup with a one-goal lead. What followed for the Pioneers (2-1) was a power-play goal from Kevin Bisson and a shorthanded breakaway goal from Brady Chevernet in the frame, pairing with a shutout period from goalie Paul Bonina (29 saves) to run away with a signature 4-1 win over the previously unbeaten Cougars (3-1).

Bonina and the penalty kill unit excelled in a game filled with 15 total penalties, outlasting an Arlington Catholic group coming off wins over highly-ranked Xaverian and Archbishop Williams in one-goal games.

“It was a good, tight game the whole time,” said St. John’s head coach G. Michael Mead. “But we just stayed together and came out at the end of the third period. I was very excited about the way we played. … (Arlington Catholic is) climbing up the power rankings and the rankings in all the different publications, so this was a good team win. Good way to start getting ready for the holiday.”

The other two Pioneers goals both came in the first period, with Caleb Keyes and Dominic Reidy burying two of the 22 shots they got on Cougars goalie Patrick Clair (33 saves) in the frame. Reidy scored his goal shortly after Nico Tashjian tied the score for Arlington Catholic.

That’s all the Cougars could get past Bonina all game despite a slew of promising chances.

“Paul Bonina kept us in that game,” Mead said. “Here’s a goalie that was on our JV team last year, worked hard during the offseason, came out at the tryouts and he’s been the No. 1 goalie for us for now the last three games. He’s doing a great job.”

In other nonleague action, Finn Kelly netted a goal to go with an assist as Archbishop Williams doubled up Franklin, 4-2. … After losing a two-goal lead in the third period, Marshfield survived Malden Catholic’s rally with a 5-4 win on Brendan McLaughlin’s game-winner in the final five minutes. … Dan Antonellis’ hat trick highlighted an offensive explosion Catholic Memorial used to defeat Falmouth, 10-1. … Triton scored three goals in the second and third periods for a 6-2 win over Masconomet, anchored by Luke Sullivan’s hat trick. … Ryan Abreau tied the game with 22 seconds left in regulation and Nate Navega scored the game winner to lead  Apponequet/Old Colony to a 3-2 victory over Foxboro.

Tyler Bourgea had a goal and assist for Tewksbury in a 4-1 MVC/DCL crossover win against Central Catholic.

Brody Shaw cleaned up a pair of rebounds at the post and added an empty-netter for a hat trick, scoring all three goals in the third period for Attleboro as part of a 3-1 Hockomock League win over Oliver Ames.
