Weather forecast: Boston will ‘definitely’ see a White Christmas

Dreaming of a White Christmas? You may be in luck.

Boston’s cold weather is expected to hold through most of the week, meaning Friday’s snow could be here to stay, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Caitlyn Mensch.

“Given how cold it’s going to be … it’s definitely going to be a White Christmas, there’s a pretty good chance for that,” Mensch said.

“Most areas that at least saw more than an inch of snow, or even an inch, are probably going to be seeing snow on the ground for Christmas,” Mensch added.

Massachusetts may even see another light accumulation overnight Monday, into Tuesday morning, Christmas Eve.

“It’s going to be a very quick-moving system that moves through … in the overnight period, but there could be some lingering showers in the morning timeframe,” Mensch said.

Mensch added that the Boston area will “definitely” be cold enough to see additional snow, but the NWS is not predicting significant amounts.

The Cape could have a slightly higher chance of precipitation, but with the potential for higher temperatures, it may be “really wet snow or even a mix in some places,” according to Mensch.

The meteorologist predicted an inch or less of snow in many areas, although northeast of Boston may have a slightly higher chance at more than an inch.

Friday’s winter storm saw more than 200 car crashes in Massachusetts, and this holiday week could see a record number of travelers, according to AAA.

With the light accumulation Tuesday, there’s always a risk of traffic and travel impacts, but Mensch did not foresee the event to have a significantly high risk for major traffic impacts.

Monday will see slightly higher temperatures than Sunday’s biting cold – highs in the mid- to upper-20s, according to Mensch, but temperatures will gradually warm up during the week.

“As we head towards Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll see temperatures in the mid 30s,” Mensch said.
