Joe Mazzulla hit with hefty fine for ‘aggressively pursuing’ ref after Celtics loss

Joe Mazzulla’s holiday wishes cost him a pretty penny.

The Celtics head coach was fined $35,000 on Saturday for “aggressively pursuing and directing inappropriate language toward a game official” after Thursday night’s 117-108 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

Mazzulla had to be held back by multiple members of his coaching staff and escorted toward the locker room while attempting to argue with Tony Brothers’ officiating crew. Asked after the game about the exchange, the coach quipped: “I just hadn’t seen them in a while, so (I was saying) just a Merry Christmas, happy holidays,”

“I wasn’t sure I was going to see them before the holiday, and I just can’t let a moment go by to where you wish someone just the best to them and theirs and their families,” Mazzulla said.

Mazzulla was hit with a technical foul during the fourth quarter of the loss for coming onto the court to argue a jump-ball call. He said postgame that he deserved that tech.

Jaylen Brown was T’d up moments. Chicago made both technical free throws, won the jump ball and immediately hit a 3-pointer to increase its lead from three points to eight. The Celtics never recovered.

Jayson Tatum also received a technical foul later in the fourth. Tatum and Brown both took issue with official Justin Van Duyne after the game, with Brown calling Van Duyne’s handling of his and Mazzulla’s technicals “bull—-.”

The Celtics and Bulls will play a rematch Saturday night in Chicago.
