Battenfeld: Michelle Wu lives in alternate universe where buying new Mustangs is good policy

Michelle Wu’s audacious purchase of flashy new Mustang electric cars follows her habit of living in an alternate universe shielded from public criticism and normal restraints.

The decision to buy $50,000 cars amid skyrocketing tax rates and a budget crunch comes as Wu continues to defend the expensive White Stadium rebuild plan – this time on a liberal social media site and a friendly radio show.

Wu truly lives in another world where she doesn’t have to subject herself to the same rules and criticism that other pols face every day.

She’s the Mayor in a Bubble.

How could she possibly think it’s not a problem when city workers are driving shiny new Mustangs and ordinary taxpayers are getting hit with big property rate increases?

It’s just another example of how sadly out of touch she’s become.

Just when you think she is out of control by saying she’ll fund a pet project “no matter what the cost” she hits a new low with the sleek new white Mustangs.

She responded to rival Ed Flynn’s proposal to kill the White Stadium plan by releasing a lengthy statement on Bluesky – the new preferred platform for progressives looking to escape the toxicity of Elon Musk’s X.

It’s another safe space for Wu, like public radio interviews and Java with Jimmy.

“Public projects rightly deserve scrutiny and too many stadium projects have left taxpayers in the lurch,” Wu wrote on Bluesky. “I’ve been a fierce critic of bad deals for Boston — not stopping now.”

It’s disrespectful for Wu to rely on woke channels of communication most residents don’t hear or use. She should be on every platform every day, not just on “Ask the Mayor” days.

It’s disrespectful to ignore and ghost a duly elected city councilor. If a city councilor has a question about a project, she should respond to it, rather than just run to her adoring fans on Bluesky.

Wu is not just sensitive to criticism, she’s tone-deaf.

She’s supporting a proposal to essentially privatize a valuable city property so Boston public school kids get to use it half the time. Why can’t the kids get to use it all the time?

Much like with the electric Mustangs, Wu is more concerned about looking politically correct than with ordinary people putting food on the table. She lives in her own world full of like-minded people without engaging with real people.

She’s protecting herself at the cost of shutting out constituents.

The question is, whether that’s going to come back to haunt her when she’s in a real campaign against Ed Flynn or Josh Kraft.

Every time a Boston resident sees one of those new white Mustangs they should look at their tax bill.

The new cars are a symbol of her largesse, much the same way a helicopter became a symbol of Jane Swift’s administration and a Cadillac became the symbol for Deval Patrick’s.

Will the Mustangs finally stick with Wu?

Much like that two-week City Hall holiday email that Wu’s administration insisted was an error, the jury is still out on that one.
