Jaylen Brown’s mother’s home reportedly burglarized during Celtics road trip
The Wellesley home of Jaylen Brown’s mother was burglarized earlier this week, according to multiple reports Wednesday evening.
WBZ-TV’s Steve Burton was the first to report the break-in, which occurred while Brown’s Boston Celtics were traveling for a road game against the Washington Wizards on Sunday. Brown subsequently missed a Celtics practice to be with his mother, per Burton’s report.
The intruders “thought they were breaking into Brown’s home while he was away,” according to a report by WCVB. It was unclear whether Brown’s mother was home at the time, but WCVB reported no one was injured, though “some valuables were taken.”
The perpetrators reportedly are “believed to be part of a larger criminal ring” that has orchestrated break-ins at the homes of several high-profile athletes in recent months, including NFL stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Joe Burrow and NBA veterans Bobby Portis and Mike Conley.
The break-in at Burrow’s Ohio home occurred Dec. 10, while the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback was in Dallas to play the Cowboys on “Monday Night Football.”
In late November, the NBA sent a memo to its teams informing them that the FBI “connected many of the home burglaries to transnational South American Theft Groups” that are “reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices,” according to the Associated Press.
“(These groups) are primarily focused on cash and items that can be resold on the black market, such as jewelry, watches, and luxury bags,” the NBA memo read, per the AP.
The league reportedly recommended players utilize alarm systems at their homes and “protective guard services” during long road trips. It also suggested locking up valuables, taking down online home listings and “even … having dogs assist with home protection.”
The Celtics did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Brown was present at Wednesday’s practice ahead of Boston’s Thursday night matchup with the Chicago Bulls at TD Garden.
