Bruins waive Tyler Johnson, Oliver Wahlstrom set to make debut in Edmonton

The Tyler Johnson experiment is over before it ever really got off the ground.

The Bruins announced on Thursday that the club had placed the veteran, two-time Stanley Cup winner on uncondiitional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Johnson came to Bruins’ training camp on a tryout agreement and did enough to earn a one year-deal at a league minimum of $775,000, though because of the B’s salary cap situation he couldn’t actually sign the deal until Nov. 4.

But playing time for Johnson was hard to find, both under former coach Jim Montgomery and current interim coach Joe Sacco. The 34-year-old Johnson played in just nine games and, even in the games he played, he was rarely on either of the power play units. That was curious, considering that with Chicago last year he had 17-14-31 totals and 8-8-16 of that came on the power play. The B’s have also been at or near the bottom of the league on the power play all season.

Johnson, however, struggled to stay out of the box. He took five minors in the nine games he played. In his last game in a Bruin uniform against the Seattle Kraken earlier on the current road trip, he took an offensive zone tripping penalty that led to a Kraken goal shortly after the infraction was up. He was also minus-4 in that game in which the B’s lost 5-1. Johnson had two assists and no goals in his Bruins’ stay.

The Bruins jettisoning Johnson, one way or another, seemed to be a fait accompli when they claimed right wing Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers from the New York Islanders last Saturday.

Wahlstrom was set to make his Bruin debut on Thursday against the Edmonton Oilers. In the morning skate he was on a third line with Charlie Coyle and Trent Frederic. Wahlstrom was also on the second PP unit.

“We’ve gone over stuff that we feel is important for him to understand as far as how we play, but you have to be careful that you don’t give him too much information. You don’t want to paralyze the player,” Sacco told reporters in Edmonton. “Just go out and play and we’ll correct the mistakes from our structure. But we just want to see him go and play (Thursday).”

Jeremy Swayman was set to get his third straight start.

At 2-2 on this road trip, the B’s were looking to go home with a winning mark, though they were facing an explosive Oilers team. After getting blown out their first two games of the trip, the B’s earned good wins in Vancouver and Calgary.

“At times, we certainly like the way we’re playing. You’re never 100 percent satisfied with your game,” said Sacco, who was 9-4 since taking over from Montgomery. “You’re always trying to improve but I think the details in our game, as far as checking and our play away from the puck have been better. Offensively, we’ve been able to generate, some games we’d probably like to be able to generate more. But I’ve liked the work in progress so far.”
