FOXBORO — Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was happy to see his predecessor land a new head coaching job this week.

Bill Belichick signed a five-year contract to become the University of North Carolina’s new head coach and was introduced in a press conference Thursday afternoon.

“Happy for him. He’s a good coach. He should be coaching,” Mayo said Friday. “I’m sure he’s going to do a good job out there. Wish him nothing but the best.”

There are still coaches on Mayo’s staff who carried over from Bill Belichick’s tenure, including safeties coach Brian Belichick, cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino, defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington and assistant quarterbacks coach/director of game management Evan Rothstein.

Mayo was asked if he expects those coaches to finish out the season with the Patriots.

“Well, my anticipation is that we will have all of our coaches, so I’m not sure,” Mayo said. “But again, it could change. I mean, I don’t know.”

Mayo didn’t answer when asked specifically if he expects Brian Belichick to follow his father to North Carolina. The youngest Belichick said Thursday that he’s focused on preparing for the Cardinals this week.
