Red Sox to play spring exhibition series in Mexico this March

When the Red Sox break camp in Fort Myers this coming March, they’ll make a quick international detour before jetting to Texas for the regular season opener.

The Red Sox will play a two-game exhibition series in Mexico against Sultanes de Monterrey on March 24-25, the clubs each announced via social media on Monday. Sultanes plays in the Mexican League and has won 10 league championships since its founding in 1939.

This will be the second consecutive season the Red Sox have played an international exhibition series during spring training. Last March the Red Sox played two games against the Tampa Bay Rays in the Dominican Republic, and previously the club has played regular season games internationally in Tokyo in 2008 and in London in 2019.

The series will also continue a trend of the Red Sox playing road exhibitions as a lead-in to the season opener. Last year the club stopped in Texas to play two games against the Rangers on their way out to Seattle. This year Boston will fly to Monterrey before opening the 2025 campaign against the Rangers on March 27.

The series will give MLB a presence in Mexico this season after previous plans to play regular season games in Mexico City fell through. The league played games in Mexico City in 2023 and 2024, and the current labor agreement calls for a series to return in 2026.

MLB has also played regular season series in Monterrey on five separate occasions, including the first ever international games in league history back in 1996.

News of the Mexico series was first reported by Evan Drellich of The Athletic.
