2 Gardner residents dead after 3-car crash in New Salem, authorities say
An 89-year-old and 74-year-old from Gardner died after a three-car crash on Route 202 in New Salem, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
The two people, who were the driver and passenger of one vehicle involved in the collision, were pronounced dead at the scene of the Friday crash, Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan said.
“Several other people from the two other vehicles involved in the crash were taken to Athol Memorial Hospital after suffering injuries. A driver of one of those vehicles was transported by helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester,” Sullivan said in a statement.
Route 202 was shut down for “several hours” while the roadway was cleared, Sullivan said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said.
The identities of the other people involved in the collision were not immediately made public.
