Mekhi Dodd powers Catholic Memorial past King Philip for Div. 2 title

FOXBORO – For John DiBiasio, it’s sweet 16.

Mekhi Dodd totaled 169 yards and three touchdowns as Catholic Memorial won its third Division 2 Super Bowl in four years with a 39-21 win over No. 2 King Philip on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium.

The win gives Catholic Memorial coach John DiBiaso his 16th championship in 23 title game appearances. He is one of only two coaches (Mike Ross) to win a title at three different schools.

“What’s the adjective you put before 16? Sweet,” DiBiaso said. “This is a sweet 16. Every win is different because you have different kids, and these kids worked very hard to achieve this. Very fortunate.”

Each of the Knights’ last three Super Bowl victories have come against King Philip.

The game started with a bang as Knights running back Lasean Sharp (8 carries, 148 yards, two touchdowns) broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, but Warriors back Drew Laplante answered with a 64-yard touchdown run of his own to tie the game at eight.

The key play of the game came late in the second quarter with Catholic Memorial ahead 14-8. On fourth down and four and less than 40 seconds remaining, Kise Flannery escaped pressure, rolled right and hit Dodd, who went the distance for a 37-yard touchdown and a 20-8 lead.

“Our running backs played tough. The conditions were not best for passing as it was like a wind tunnel but Kise made a big pass to Mekhi,” DiBiaso. “It’s a great win for us. King Philip is a fantastic program.”

The Knights’ lead stretched to 18 to begin the second half. After the sides traded punts, Dodd rushed for carries of 37 and 30 yards before plunging into the end zone from three yards out to stretch the CM advantage to 26-8 with 7:41 left in the third.

King Philip tried to get back into it and Hayden Schmitz corralled a 42-yard touchdown reception to trim the deficit to 26-14. The Knights immediately struck back. A 51-yard run by Sharp set CM up inside the end zone, and a few plays later Dodd scored his third touchdown of the night.

CM forced a pair of turnovers on downs, however, and Gavin Brown came up with an interception to seal the win for the Knights.
