Division 5 state championship preview: Legendary coaches, talented teams to clash

Foxboro’s Jack Martinelli and Shawsheen’s Al Costabile are Massachusetts coaching royalty and their teams have been on a Division 5 collision course all season.

The two met a year ago in the semifinals where the Warriors rolled past the Rams, 42-12, on the way to a Super Bowl title. Now the teams will meet again, this time in Gillette Stadium, with the Agganis Trophy on the line.

“We have a great deal of respect for the Foxboro program that Jack Martinelli and his staff have built,” Rams coach Al Costabile said. “They are the defending champs. They earned it and own it until a team takes it away.”

Shawsheen has been an unstoppable machine, averaging 39.3 points per game while its defense has surrendered only 67 points in 12 games.

Quarterback Sid Tildsley is the ringleader. The senior, who is 40-6 as a starter, has accounted for 1,687 yards of total offense and 34 touchdowns. Tailback Jake Banda has added 980 yards and 13 scores while Dyllon Pratt leads Division 5 with 12 receiving touchdowns.

Defensively, Connor Walsh and James Tildsley have combined for 20 sacks while Sid Tildsley and Pratt each have four interceptions.

“I can’t stress enough how hard my players and coaches have worked to ensure a great season,” Costabile said.

Foxboro’s return trip to Gillette certainly had its bumps in the road.

The Warriors opened 0-3 before winning five straight to earn a playoff spot. Then came a pair of convincing wins before Ben Angellini’s last-minute touchdown run against Hanover earned the champs a return date at Gillette.

“Ben makes a huge difference for us,” Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli said. “He does those things that you just can’t teach as a coach.”

The Warriors have also faced Division 2 finalist King Philip, and Division 3 finalists Mansfield and North Attleboro.

Quarterback Mike Marcucella has engineered an offense that averaged 23.0 points per game and has scored 30 or more points four times in nine games. The Warriors’ defense has allowed only 13.1 points a game and over 20 only once since the 0-3 start.

“The kids have worked hard to get back here,” Martinelli said. “The kids quietly wrote down their goals as a team and it speaks volumes that this is where they wanted to end up.”

State title history

Shawsheen is competing in its fourth state championship game, the last appearance coming in 2022 when it lost to North Reading, 44-28. The Rams’ only win came in 2010 when they defeated Blue Hills 20-6 in the Div. 4 championship game.

Foxboro is playing in the final game for the 10th time in school history and has an overall record of 5-4. The Warriors are the defending champions, having rolled past Hanover 48-21 last year as Ben Angelini ran for 141 yards and a pair of scores.

Danny V’s outlook

These teams met in the state semifinals last year with Foxboro rolling to a 42-12 victory. While we feel Shawsheen is better equipped to deal with Foxboro, I still think the Warriors will find a way to get the job done in their backyard of sorts.

Pick: Foxboro
