Massachusetts snow forecast: 2 to 5 inches of snow in spots, sparking ‘difficult travel’

The first plowable snow of the season is on the way.

Parts of Massachusetts could see up to 6 inches of snow from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service’s Boston office.

A “Winter Weather Advisory” has been issued for central and western Massachusetts, where forecasters are predicting 2 to 5 inches of snow — and localized areas of 6 inches of snow for the highest terrain.

The Boston-area could see some light snowflakes, but meteorologists are not expecting any accumulation for inside the I-95 corridor. This region should get mainly rain.

“We’ll have a quick clipper system passing on through Wednesday night and exiting the region on Thursday morning,” Torry Dooley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Boston office, told the Herald.

The snow should begin at the tail end of Wednesday evening’s commute, peaking during the overnight hours.

“There could be difficult travel overnight into the Thursday morning commute,” Dooley said, noting the snow-covered roads and low visibility at night.

The larger snow accumulations of the snowfall range are expected to be in the higher terrain of the northern Worcester Hills and Berkshires.

Following the clipper system, a strong cold front may bring a few snow squalls Thursday and also result in strong winds developing. Wind gusts could hit 40 mph.

“That could lead to some sporadic power outages after the snow,” Dooley said.

Then on Friday, temps will be well below normal — with highs in the upper 20s and lower 30s for much of the region.

The cold will be accompanied by gusty winds, which will drive wind chills down into the teens and low 20s.

Ahead of the snow system, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency was reminding residents to be prepared for winter weather hazards.

“Prepare ahead of time by: Checking road conditions and the forecast. Packing an emergency supply kit. Making sure your vehicle is working properly,” MEMA posted.

Drivers should make sure they leave enough space between them and the vehicle in front of them, said Dooley at the National Weather Service.

“Give yourself extra time for your commute,” Dooley said of winter weather driving, also adding, “Use common sense.”
