France November 2024: Renault 5 surges to #7, #1 BEV
The Renault 5 is already inside the French Top 10.
7th straight month of year-on-year fall for the French new car market in November at -12.7% to just 133,318 units, that’s -22.8% on pre-pandemic November 2019. The year-to-date volume is now off -3.7% to 1,534,756, -23.4% below 2019. Petrol sales sink -31.5% to 33,411, diesel is off -33.3% to 8,821, HEVs are up 31% to 52,462, PHEVs drop -19.6% to 11,683 and BEVs are down -24.6% to 23,255 and 17.4% share vs. 20.2% in November 2023. Year-to-date, BEV sales are stable at +0.1% to 261,524 and 17% share vs. 16.4% over the same period last year.
Renault (+4.4%) defies the negative market with a positive result leading it to 16.8% share vs. 16.1% so far this year. Archenemy Peugeot (-0.6%) is stable year-on-year to 13.4% share while Dacia (-6.5%) rallies back up to its traditional third spot. Volkswagen (+3.5%) also advances one rank on last month to #4 with Toyota (-10.1%) falling to #5. Citroen (-20.6%) is in a rut again, stuck at #6. BMW stays at #7 with 4.2% share, distancing the two other German premiums Audi (-8.4%) and Mercedes (-24.2%) ranking #9 and #10 respectively. Skoda (+5.8%) repeats at a record 8th place with 3.1% share. Cupra (+17.1%) and Suzuki (+1.9%) are the only additional gainers among the Top 20 brands just as Tesla (-59.8%), Fiat (-50.7%) and Nissan (-48.2%) all crater.
Over in the models charts, the Renault Clio (-4.9%) is the best-seller this month, toppling the Peugeot 208 (+22.7%) which had a particularly weak year-ago performance. The Clio is now just 165 sales below the 208 in the year-to-date order and should snap the FY2024 top spot as Renault sales are traditionally stronger in end-of-quarter months. The Dacia Sandero (+7.9%) remains in third place. The new Citroen C3 IV shoots up 14 spots on October to a best-ever 4th position ahead of the Peugeot 308 (-29.8%) and Dacia Duster III. The event of the month is the 7th place of the Renault 5, up from #52 in October now that deliveries to end customers have begun. This means the Renault 5 is already the best-selling EV in the country above the Tesla Model Y (#11) and Citroen e-C3 (#21). The Renault Symbioz improves two spots to a record #17 while the BMW X1 is inside the Top 20 for the first time at #20 and the Renault Rafale breaks into the Top 50 for the first time at #46.
